Racing around the block
The Columbiana Area Chamber of Commerce’s first block party was a success Friday as a large crowd showed up to celebrate fathers for June’s theme of Father’s Day. The remote control car race hosted by Brix ‘n Brew was the new, popular event at the gathering. Also people enjoyed live music and food in several locations along the street as they took in the car show, games and craft vendors in downtown Columbiana. Morning Journal/Patti Schaeffer

Morning Journal/Patti SchaefferSteubenville Pike resident Brenda Tullis and her son lost their Jeep but not their lives after the vehicle became stuck on the railroad tracks while they were returning home from an early morning trip to the Salem Walmart. Shortly before 4:30 a.m. the Jeep Grand Cherokee became stuck on the tracks at the Cunningham Road crossing, but Tullis and her son were able to get out of the SUV before an eastbound Norfolk-Southern train slammed into it, carrying it about a quarter of a mile down the tracks before coming to a stop. A woman was transported by Leetonia Fire/EMS to St. Elizabeth’s Health Center in Youngstown following a single-vehicle accident on state Route 164 south of Beeson-Mill Road just before 8:30 a.m. Monday. According to patrol trooper Mike Smith, the woman was traveling south on state Route 164 in a 2001 Nissan Altima and drove off the right side of the road, striking a culvert. The woman had to be extricated by Leetonia firefighters. Steve’s Towing also assisted in pulling car to the road surface so she could be removed from the vehicle. The name was of the driver was not available. The car is owned by Willis Barnhart of Columbiana. The accident remains under investigation. Morning journal/Patti Schaeffer

Leetonia and Columbiana fire departments responded to a car fire in the northbound land of state Route 11 under the state Route 344 underpass just after 3:30 p.m. Friday. Rick Casteel of Akron said he was driving a 1999 Buick LeSabre that he and his chase driver had just picked up in Calcutta, on their way to the Akron Auto Auction, when smoke started coming through the vents. Thirty-year-old Amanda Carrigan of Wheeling, W.Va. was cited for OVI and assured clear distance after driving her 2001 Honda Civic into the back of a semi tractor-trailer on state Route 11 Saturday afternoon. Justin Childs, 39, of Hackett, Ark. was driving his 2013 Freightliner northbound on state Route 11 when he was reportedly hit from behind and actually pushed forward by Carrigan’s car. Childs was not injured in the crash, and Carrigan, who was reportedly recovering from a medical procedure earlier in the week, refused transport to the hospital. Leetonia Fire/EMS responded to the crash. Leetonia medics bandaged Carrigan’s injuries at the scene and encouraged her to get further immediate medical attention. After refusing transport, Carrigan was given a field sobriety test, shown above, by troopers Jodi Bolen and Brian Kavanagh at the scene and taken into custody where she was transported to the Lisbon Post for a urine test. Ben McCormick of Leetonia brought his 1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe to the Columbiana Nazarene Church’s car-truck-bike cruise on Tuesday. The 1940 Chevy is all original except for the battery and still sports the capital A gasoline rationing sticker on the windshield from the days of World War II. According to Wikipedia, the A sticker entitled the owner to get 3-4 gallons of gasoline per week. McCormick said his car gets about 18.5 miles per gallon and can easily go 60-70 mph with it 6-cylinder engine. He has owned the car for five years. Morning Journal/Patti Schaeffer

McVey was one of many who stopped to peruse the cars on display at Lisbon's annual classic car show in the courthouse parking lot. From Lisbon Car Show - Summer Concert Series Lazy River Band
Four-year-old Layne Jones was struck by a car along with his aunt Kristin Jones while they attempted to cross East Lincoln Way in Lisbon. Layne was transported by KLG Ambulance to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Youngstown while Kristin was taken by KLG to Salem Community Hospital.
